Many of today’s social challenges—including population, resources, the environment, and inequality—are rooted in the structure of the economic system itself. Using the methods of system design and management, our laboratory explores how capitalism can be redefined and reconstructed.

and management needed to do so.

Modern society benefits enormously from economic and social development. Yet the same development is inseparable from a broad range of challenges, including population growth, conflict over resources, environmental degradation, economic inequality, poverty, disaster and safety risks, and education.

Many of these challenges are seen as negative consequences of a capitalist economy that gives priority to growth. Around the world, efforts are under way to redefine and reconstruct capitalism—to revisit the economic and social system as a whole and redesign its mechanisms so that humanity can sustain the prosperity it has built while achieving a more sustainable future.

We welcome members who share this vision and want to work with us on rethinking economic systems and translating new designs into real-world practice.

How We Work

Regular meetings are held once a week around lunchtime, generally from 12:00 to 13:00. In-person seminars are combined with weekly progress sharing on Slack, making it easier for working professionals to participate.

Structured sessions on defining a research theme and learning essential methods at the start of a project.

Lectures and discussions with specialists such as audit-firm partners, management scholars, and practitioners.

Close reading of foundational literature, complemented by focused sessions led by students and guests.

Frequently Asked Questions

For prospective lab members

Q.01How can I join the laboratory?

Please begin by contacting Professor Inokuma with a brief introduction and an explanation of your research interests and goals. Through a meeting with the professor and senior lab members, and where appropriate a lab visit, you can learn about the research and atmosphere. Participation is decided through mutual consultation and agreement. Prospective and current students should also follow the formal laboratory-allocation procedures that apply to them.

Q.02Am I free to choose my research theme?

In principle, yes. The theme should, however, have a meaningful connection to the laboratory’s areas of expertise and research direction. You can consult with the professor and senior members to identify an appropriate topic. We encourage research that contributes not only to scholarship but also to your career, your future, and the wider society.

Q.03What research methods are used?

Building on system design and management and systems engineering, members use a wide range of methods, including modeling, simulation, design thinking, and case studies.

Q.04What skills and knowledge can I develop?

You will engage in substantive discussion with students from varied disciplines in economics and business and develop the ability to approach problems from multiple perspectives. This broader field of view can provide the foundation for generating new ideas and solutions.

Q.05What facilities are available?

The laboratory does not maintain separate physical facilities, but members can use resources provided by the Graduate School of System Design and Management, including printers and network access. Slack is used for communication among members.

Q.06Does the lab collaborate with outside researchers and companies?

Yes. The laboratory actively collaborates with researchers and companies outside the university. External experts are regularly invited for lectures and discussion sessions, allowing members to learn about current research, practical problem-solving, and perspectives from different fields and industries.

Q.07What career paths do students pursue?

Because the laboratory was newly established in 2023, it does not yet have a long alumni record. Expected pathways include careers in companies and public institutions, doctoral study, and research roles at independent institutes.

Q.08Can students participate in lab activities and events?

Yes. Seminars, workshops, and other activities are held regularly, and students are encouraged to participate. These events support interaction among students and the acquisition of new knowledge and skills.

Q.09What is the atmosphere of the laboratory?

The atmosphere is open, energetic, and mutually supportive. The professor and senior students are approachable, making it easy to ask questions and seek advice. Members from different backgrounds bring diverse perspectives to stimulating discussions.
